Second Chances

God gives us all a second chance (not referring to the cheesy worship song that is sung in church) at life after death, so if the Almighty of the Universe can give us second chances, people who wronged us deserve second chances as well.  This does not mean you will forget what someone has done to you, but forgiving someone will help you greatly mentally.  There has been studies that proves forgiving can improve your mental and physical health.  You can check out this article written by the American Psychological Association here.

In the book of Jonah (written around 775 BC), Jonah was disobeying God and fleeing by getting on a boat and fleeing what God wanted him to do.  Well, God was pissed off about that and caused a huge storm to rise up against that boat.  But this crazy man, Jonah,  slept through it until the other members of crew woke him up, cast lots, and Jonah admitted that his God, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land, caused this instance.  As we could imagine, the crew is scared, and probably soiled themselves, and agree to throw Jonah overboard.  Then a giant fish comes up and swallows him.  This is where Jonah gets his second chance:

Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the belly of the fish, saying,
“I called out to the Lord, out of my distress,
    and he answered me;
out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
    and you heard my voice.
For you cast me into the deep,
    into the heart of the seas,
    and the flood surrounded me;
all your waves and your billows
    passed over me.”
-          Jonah 2:1-3 (ESV)

After the great fish swallowed Jonah, I believe that he thought he was going to die, but God did rescue him “from the belly of the fish,” which would have been certain death. God gave Jonah another chance because He is the God of second (and beyond) chances.

The next situation in the book of Matthew is in a time when the Pharisees would only forgive someone three times before they banish them from the temple, this is an assumption on my part.

Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.
-          Matthew 2:21-22 (ESV)

In this parable, Peter is trying to be the good servant by making himself better than the Pharisees and forgiving someone seven times.  But Jesus shows him up and says, no, seventy times seven (or seventy-seven depending on the translation).  Which in tells that we should always forgive one another when wrong doing.  This does not mean, if your best friend betrays you that once you forgive them, you can go back to being best friends.  That will take some time.  But instead, forgive that person who wronged you and you can move on. Don’t be someone, stressing out, letting it boil up inside, forgive that person who wronged you.

In the end, after you die, you will not get a second chance.  God has given you that chance your whole lifetime, and if you ignore it, well, it is too late by then.  Are you going to take your second chance at life, or will you let it waste away?
